Syracuse football got through the first week of camp without any major injuries, but week two has already resulted in a pair - including a season-ending injury to sophomore defensive tackle Ryan Sloan.

Injuries are part of football.

No team has felt that more in recent years than the Syracuse Orange.

Coming into this year, they were supposed to have more bodies and more depth than at any time in the Doug Marrone era. That depth will be tested as Syracuse found out about two significant injuries on Tuesday.

Defensive tackle Ryan Sloan will miss the entire 2012 season with a lower body injury, Syracuse Athletics has released. Running back/punt returner Steven Rene will be out 3-5 weeks with an upper body injury.

Sloan was among the most impressive defensive linemen early in fall camp. In fact, we identified him as a stand-out in our day one camp notebook. The 6-foot-4 sophomore was expected to be part of a deep rotation at defensive tackle. The good news for Syracuse is they have plenty of bodies at that position. With the recent addition of Davon Walls, the Orange should be able to overcome the loss. Players like Zian Jones, Marcus Coleman, and Walls will have to step up in Sloan's absence.

Rene was having a very solid camp before this setback. He showed shiftiness in the backfield, solid hands, and was the returning starter at punt returner. His injury means more reps for youngsters Ashton Broyld and George Morris. It also means different players will get a chance to show what they can do as a returner. Prime candidates to replace Rene would be Ritchy Desir, Brandon Reddish, and Wayne Morgan.

Several other Syracuse players are listed day to day with minor injuries. Senior safety Shamarko Thomas (upper body), junior defensive tackle Jay Bromley (lower body), sophomore cornerback Jaston George (upper body), junior cornerback Joe Nassib (lower body), sophomore defensive tackle Eric Crume (upper body), and senior offensive tackle Andrew Phillips (lower body) should all return to action soon.
