DeVante McFarlane

The Syracuse running back battle has become one of the most talked about themes of camp, and for good reason. Here's a look at its newest competitor.

The running back corps is filled with players of various talents. Some have intense speed, while others are known more for their power. Still others are trying to hone in on being both fast and tough.

What is known right now is the unknown. Who the starting running back will be or who the majority of carries will be trusted in the hands of has not surfaced in any open discussions to the media or from what has been seen at camp as of yet.

On the field, freshman Ashton Broyld appears to be the fastest of the litter and has also shown power by making hits before taking them. Broyld does not look to fear contact and does not look like a true freshman learning the game.

Junior Jerome Smith had the longest ground gainers at Fort Drum while also displaying good hands.

Junior Prince-Tyson Gulley has also provided good hands and has been able to get separation.

But, despite the talents of the backs currently vying for a spot on the field, Head Coach Doug Marrone decided to move freshman athlete DeVante McFarlane from strong safety to running back once the team returned from Fort Drum. McFarlane is no stranger to the position, serving as a running back in his high school days, as well as quarterback and wide receiver. What McFarlane will bring to the running back group as well as the offense as a whole is yet to be seen, but he seems to have as good a chance as any to gain playing time.

Here are some pictures of McFarlane in his new role:
