Syracuse Gets First Win vs Stony Brook
Posted Sep 15, 2012

Syracuse held on against a game Stony Brook squad to get their first win of the season. Behind big plays from Prince Tyson-Gulley, Jarrod West, and Ashton Broyld, and a strong second half defensive effort, the Orange won 28-17.

Syracuse used a strong defensive second half to pull away from a feisty Stony Brook team, 28-17.

Syracuse came out flat, as Stony Brook started the scoring with a 63 yard touchdown pass from Kyle Essington to Kevin Norrell off a playaction fake. The Orange responded with a 61 yard touchdown pass from Ryan Nassib to Prince Tyson-Gulley.

Ashton Broyld then gave Syracuse their first lead with a 22-yard touchdown run, the first of his college career. But Stony Brook responded with a 71-yard touchdown run by Miguel Maysonet in which he broke a tackle, leaped over a defender, and out-ran the Syracuse defense down the sideline. The Seawolves took a 17-14 lead into halftime.

The Orange came out firing to start the second half as Nassib orchestrated a drive that led to a 13 yard touchdown pass to Jarrod West. Holding a 21-17 lead, the Orange defense stepped up and shut down the Seawolves rushing attack.

At the start of the 4th quarter, Syracuse went for 4th and goal inside the one. Jerome Smith was stuffed and Stony Brook appeared to have the momentum. It was the second time Syracuse failed on a 4th and goal inside the Stony Brook 5-yard line.

But the Orange defense stepped up, and Syracuse added a late touchdown pass from Nassib to Marcus Sales to clinch the victory, 28-17.

In the game, Alec Lemon moved into third on the all-time receptions list and Jerome Smith set a new career high in rushing yards with 95. Ryan Nassib had over 300 yards passing and Sales had over 100 yards receiving for the third consecutive game.

Stay tuned to for much more from Syracuse's first win.
