A source close to the team has told CuseNation.com that freshman tight-end Ron Thompson will miss the entire 2012 season due to an injury.
The source says it is a hip injury which will require surgery. The surgery is scheduled for Monday, September 24th.
Thompson has not appeared in any of the first three games for Syracuse, and will likely medically redshirt the 2012 season. He will still have four years of eligibility remaining.
Thompson was Syracuse's lone 4-star commitment from the 2012 class. Some believed he could make an immediate impact given his speed, athleticism, and catching ability.
The news leave Syracuse with Beckett Wales and David Stevens as the primary tight-ends, with Carl Cutler able to slide over if needed. Max Beaulieu would be available in an emergency situation as well. Fellow freshman tight-end Josh Parris will likely redshirt as well.
The Orange face Minnesota for their first true road game of the season on Saturday.
