Marquette vs.Colgate By The Numbers

Jake Thomas has 4 pts/4 Assists vs Colgate

Christopher Chavez of our MU Hoops student staff looks at today's MU 84-63 over Colgate by the numbers.

25 - Number of Points Scored by Chris Otule and Davante Gardner

Redshirt senior Chris Otule made his return to the court for Marquette in Sunday's home opener against Colgate and he got involved early scoring the team's third and fourth points of the game. After undergoing knee surgery, the use of Otule was going to be monitored early by coach Buzz Williams. Davante Gardner was seen as more of an offensive option, while Otule would work on defense.

Oddly enough, Otule did not record a single rebound in the game but was 5-for-5 in shot attempts for 11 points. His free throw in the second half gave the team their largest lead of the first half as the Golden Eagles led by 14.

Gardner was aggressive on defense and recorded six rebounds with four of them coming on offense. He was almost "automatic" from the free throw line hitting four of five shots.

21 - Number of Minutes Played by the Freshmen

Freshman Steve Taylor came to Marquette after averaging 18.1 points per game for Simeon High School. The jitters appeared to be present in his first collegiate game as he did not get onto the stat sheet until there were about five minutes left in the second half. He only attempted three shots and none of which were three-pointers. Expect him to come into the game with a different mentality on Tuesday night.

Jamal Ferguson closed out the game with a dunk. In his eight minutes of action, he picked up a rebound, caused a steal, and scored four points. Much like Taylor, he did not take a shot from the three-point line. The game against Southeastern Louisiana could serve as a chance for them to test their range.

One - Number of Three Pointers Hit By Jake Thomas Redshirt junior Jake Thomas got his first opportunity to show off his range that has been hyped up since he decided to transfer from South Dakota. He missed his first two attempts, before making sure that the third time was the charm. He had one of the team's six three pointers.

On defense, he was diving after balls and collected four rebounds. Four assists and one steal is more than what can be asked for from a bench player making his debut for Marquette.

Five - Number of players with nine or more points Last year, Jae Crowder and Darius Johnson-Odom carried the team's offense. This year's team has a much different look with multiple contributors. Jamil Wilson led the team with 15 points and Gardner was right behind him with 14 of his own. Seeing Junior Cadougan up with some of the top scorers speaks values about the transformation that Williams has been able to put together.

Does this team need a scoring leader? Trent Lockett or Jamil Wilson could be the faces of the team, but the scoring and defense could be left up to multiple people.

Lockett's debut consisted of seven points and seven rebounds. He was able to collect five steals and three assists. He was welcomed to the Golden Eagles with 19 minutes of action. Definitely will be an important piece of the team's build going forward.

653 - Number of Days Since Juan Anderson Has Scored More Than Seven Points If there was a changed man on the court on Sunday, it was Juan Anderson. He was one point and one rebound away from a double-double. There was a quick scare in the second half for him as his shoulder was being checked out by team doctors, but it was just scar tissue.

He played 21 minutes in the game and made a case for more playing time as the team starts to prepare for the Maui Invitational after their game on Monday. In the post game press conference, he admitted to not having seen this much time on the floor since his high school days.

In his last high school game, he scored 17 points. He is not there just quite yet, but he did surpass his seven points from his game against Arroyo High School on January 28, 2011.
