Nine days removed from Marquette’s 33-point loss to Florida on the road, the Golden Eagles faced off against the rival Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday evening in their 119th series meeting all-time and won by a final score of 60-50 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Marquette came out of the gates firing on all cylinders and pushed the tempo as opposed to slowing it down like Bo Ryan’s swing offense does so well. Marquette led 34-20 at halftime and had the momentum going into the break. Vander Blue nailed a three-pointer as time expired on the shot clock and Davante Gardner followed that up with a steal and coast-to-coast lay up which fired up the 18,588 fans in attendance.

Wisconsin controlled most of the second half and inched their way back into the game coming within three points, but could never quite take a lead. Leading the balanced scoring attack for the Badgers were Ryan Evans and Jared Berggren with 9 points apiece. Wisconsin relied too much on their three-point shot that wasn’t falling as the Badgers went 7-25 from long distance

Vander Blue started the game on fire shooting the ball scoring 15 points in the first half, but was held in check and could only muster 2 points in the second half. Luckily, teammate Junior Cadougan had his back scoring a career-high 18 points and also dishing out 6 assists in the game.

During the closing minutes, Cadougan came up huge with a pair of three-point plays. One was off a Juan Anderson block on the defensive end and the other came from full-court inbound pass from Vander Blue baseline to baseline to give Marquette fans bragging rights for yet another year.

Marquette pounded the ball and had 36 of their 60 points in the paint. Davante Gardner was efficient with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Despite Wisconsin being in the bonus with 13-minutes remaining in the game, the Badgers still had a hard time converting from the free-throw line shooting a mere 39% which didn’t do them any favors hoping to crawl their way back into the game. The Golden Eagles shot 48% from the field and came up with 9 steals in a valiant effort on the defensive end too.

Former Marquette head coach Rick Majerus passed away last Saturday and a funeral was held prior to the Marquette/Wisconsin game earlier in the morning at Gesu Church. Buzz Williams would honor the late Majerus by sporting a black turtleneck while coaching during the game and the players will now wear a patch on their jerseys for the remainder of the season to also pay tribute.

Marquette’s next home game is an afternoon contest against Savannah State on December 15th. Box score and play-by-play (pdf)
