Maryland hopes a certain family legacy will help reel in Garrett Dickerson, the 7th best DE of 2014.

Garrett Dickerson, FOXSportsNEXT's No. 41-rated prospect of 2014, recently ended a season where his team fell three points short of a championship, but the year has been anything but disappointing for the New Jersey native.

“I thought our season went alright,” Dickerson said. “We definitely had some let downs but we also did some really great things like beat our rival Don Bosco which we haven't done in eight years; I thought I had a very good season doing everything I could to help my team win.”

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound defensive end recorded 56 tackles and six sacks for Bergen Catholic High School en route to being considered the seventh best player at his position and earning numerous offers.

Stanford, Rutgers, South Carolina, Connecticut and Tennessee have requested Dickerson's services, to name a few, and Ohio State and Michigan have offered the highly touted player as a tight end. Offers from Alabama and Michigan State could be on the way as well.

“I was flattered by all the programs that have expressed interest in me because it is truly an honor,” Dickerson said. “All of them are great schools and programs so for them to be interested in me is very flattering.”

Two other schools that have made offers to Dickerson may present a stronger emotional pull due to family connections. His brother Cameron Dickerson plays at Northwestern and the four star prospect admitted that playing with his older brother again “would be great.” The other school with family ties to Dickerson sits in College Park.

“Both of my parents went [to Maryland] and they always talk about how much fun they had there and how it is an amazing place,” Dickerson said. “So [considering] what I hear from them it seems like a great place with great academics.”

Dickerson said that the Terps are recruiting him hard and that his relationship with their staff is good, largely through talks with Assistant Coach Keith Dudzinski. Dickerson acknowledged that he is impressed with Maryland's uniforms and academics, but those aren't the only things that caught his attention.

“I think [leaving the ACC] was a great move by Maryland because the Big Ten is an amazing conference and they are going to play some great teams,” Dickerson said. “So I think it was a very good idea of them to move to the Big Ten.”

Dickerson's plan is to begin taking official visits in the spring and summer, and while he said that distance won't be a factor in his college choice, he did describe what he will be looking for as he weighs his options.

“A program that isn't afraid to play anyone and most importantly a place where I can get a great education,” Dickerson said.

Though Dickerson said that he is “nowhere close to a decision,” he expects to make his choice in the fall. He did, however, express a special interest in the Terrapins.

“I am very interested in Maryland as [I] am all the other schools that have offered me,” Dickerson said. “Probably a little more in Maryland though because both of my parents went there, so I am definitely looking into it.”

For now, Dickerson said that he is going to continue working on all aspects of his game as he prepares for his senior year. His speed off the ball and ability to play both sides will likely mean more offers down the road, and it will take a substantial recruiting effort to land him.
