Buzz Williams reflects on the Season so far

Posted Jan 17, 2013

On Media Day, Buzz Williams explained that he was building a house for his team. A house for this team only, and one that must be sold when the season is over. One that his team cannot live in again.

And now, two months into the season, and four games into Big East play, the Marquette men’s basketball team house has taken shape.

But it hasn’t been easy.

“It’s a hard ass build,” Williams said. “I try and be very blunt and honest with you guys (the media), and I’m blunt and honest with our team, I don’t think we’re great. And honestly, I’m not sure what we’re good at, at times.”

Though the Golden Eagles have started the season 4-0, Williams admitted that his team easily could find themselves on the other end of the spectrum.

“Honestly, and this is not motivational, I don’t think we’re going to blow out anybody,” Williams said. “Whoever’s on their team, whoever’s hurt, whoever’s not hurt, what their record is, what our record is… I mean we could very easily be 0-4.”

But they’re not. Redshirt junior forward Jamil Wilson said their start in Big East play is a result of how they have grown this season.

“I really can’t explain it,” Wilson said. “(Our house is) not going to be a mansion – it’s not Buzz’s house – but we have to start somewhere. As we continue to grow, we continue to figure things out as a team and mesh together more and grind out tough games like Pittsburgh and grind out ugly games.”

Marquette is halfway through their regular season, but Williams said they still have a long way to go.

“I just think that collectively our house is probably, we’ve beginning to understand that’s where this guys’ room is, this is where this guys’ room is, and I think they understand it,” Williams said. “It’s still a long time to go, it’s an eternity left, but I think we are in a much better space as far as understanding how we need to live over the last two weeks than we were maybe a month ago.”

And with less than two months to go before the Big East tournament, Wilson said the team still has a lot of building left to do.

“Every game you learn something whether you win or lose and fortunately we’ve been winning so even though the next day we’ll have film and we’ll have four good, and we’ll have four bad, and they’ll show the bad first of course because you want to end with the good,” Wilson said. “But we still have yet to play a perfect game, and I don’t think it’ll happen anytime soon, so as the season goes on, you continue to build more of your house and learn more about your team.”
