Williams Recaps 'Cuse Camp

One of the top defensive backs in New York, three star safety Jalen Williams is on Syracuse's radar. He attended a camp with the Orange over the weekend where he was able to work with some of their coaches. He discusses that and more inside.

Newburgh Free Academy (NY) safety Jalen Williams was one of a few three star prospects who attended Syracuse's camps over this past weekend. He felt his performance was solid, but was not his best.

"The camp was fun," Williams said. "In the beginning we did 40-yard dashes, 3-cone drills, stuff like that. Combine type things. I did alright in that. My 40-time was in the 4.7 range. I think I can get in the 4.6's pretty soon. That's where I want to be. We did 7-on-7 and 1-on-1 stuff also. I think I held my own. I did pretty good. I matched up well with the other guys."

Williams spent the team working with secondary coach Fred Reed. He says he was able to learn from the Syracuse assistant, but his offer status is up in the air. Williams was offered by the Marrone staff, and the offer was confirmed in March according to Newburgh Free Academy head coach Bob Bianco. However, the new staff decided recently they needed to see him at camp before the offer would stay on the table.

"I got to work with the DB coach ," Williams recalled. "Coach Reed. I was doing all of the position drills with him. I haven't really heard back from them. We're waiting to hear back on where I stand this week. They're supposed to be contacting me and letting me know as far as the offer and everything. Hopefully I still have the offer."

Should an offer come from the Orange, Williams says they would very much be in the mix.

"Syracuse is very high on my list," Williams admitted. "It would be awesome to have that offer. It was good to get out and meet the coaches and work with them. So I can see what I'll be dealing with over the next four years if I were to go there.

"I've been up there to visit a few times. I'd like to visit and see how things are with the new coaches."

Williams has offers from five other schools, and says two contact him the most as he looks to decide before the fall.

"Right now I have six scholarship offers if you include Syracuse," Williams claimed. "I have Old Dominion, Temple, Pittsburgh, I guess counting Syracuse, Buffalo and UMass. I've been getting a lot of interest from Pitt and Temple. They've been reaching out a lot trying to get me down to the camps. Just keeping the communication open.

"I'm still a ways away from my decision. I want to decide before I step onto the field for my senior season."
