Incoming Freshman Focus: Patterson & Johnson

With Syracuse losing three starters, the guard and forward positions have taken a hit. Autry shares his thoughts on two freshmen that have an opportunity to help set before them inside.

As the Syracuse Orange head into their first season as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), the coaching staff is looking to see where the newcomers to the squad can fit in.

Michael Carter-Williams' decision to enter the NBA Draft with two seasons of eligibility left has given incoming freshman point guard Tyler Ennis a fast-track to take over.

But with Brandon Triche and James Southerland also leaving, both a guard and a forward position have opened, respectively.

Heading onto the Orange are Ron Patterson and B.J. Johnson, players who are considered capable of competing at for both the guard and forward positions.

"We always have versatile guys and those are the questions that will be answered in our [European] trip," said Syracuse assistant coach Adrian Autry on where Patterson and Johnson will set up on the floor in the coming season. "We think both of those guys can play maybe multiple positions, but we just want to try to get a good feel and the best way to do that is put them in game situations. So we'll be figuring it out as we go."

Individually, Autry began by focusing on Patterson out of Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. "Ron Patterson is someone who I think is gonna surprise people," Autry expressed. "Not a lot of talk about him, but he had a great year in his last year of high school. [He] can shoot the ball. [He is a] strong, tough kid. He's built kinda like Brandon Triche, so he's a strong kid. 6'11" wingspan, can shoot the ball, so he'll be a nice addition."

Moving onto the Lower Merion High School alum out of Pennsylvania, Autry offered, "B.J. Johnson is that wild card. He's young, has to fill out a little bit, but his upside is tremendous. He can shoot the ball."

"So we just gotta figure it out," Autry added. "We gotta figure it out and I think this is why we're taking that trip."
