Recruiting Reset: Cornerback

Recruiting Reset: Cornerback

Syracuse lost one cornerback commitment on Thursday, but all is not lost. CuseNation.com breaks down where the Orange go from here at the position, including top targets, slots available and names to monitor throughout the cycle.

Syracuse lost arguably their most high profile commit in the 2015 class when cornerback Davante Davis decommitted. Despite Davis' decision, things are not lost at cornerback.

The Commits

Syracuse is down to one commit at cornerback in three-star Gerald Robinson. Robinson is as solid as it gets despite not visiting the Orange campus. He should help Syracuse recruit in the Sunshine State.

Slots Available

Syracuse is looking for around three corners this class. With Robinson in the fold, they can focus on filling up the other two slots.

The Top Targets

The target that may be deciding soon is Daivon Ellison. Rumblings are that he will be visiting the weekend of June 7th with his parents. That visit will go a long way in determining where the Orange stand.

Behind Ellison are several prospects. D'Andre Smart is another Florida prospect. He is viewed by Syracuse as big time prospect who will bring a lot of upside and athleticism to the position. The Orange visited Smart during his spring game last week and he admitted he has considered committing more than once.

He is trying to plan a visit over the summer but nothing is scheduled. He calls Syracuse his leader and says a visit as well as discussing things with his mom and coach are what are preventing him from pulling the trigger.

Jeremiah Dinson is another Florida corner who has been high on Syracuse. He is good friends with commit Gerald Robinson which could help the Orange's cause.

Others To Keep An Eye On

Antonio "Speedy" Howard remains interested in Syracuse despite his commitment to Cincinnati. He tells Scout.com's John Garcia Jr. that he plans to keep his options open despite his pledge.

Denzel Ward picked up an offer. The three-star cornerback from Ohio seems to want to stay closer to home, but is still being recruited by Syracuse.

Three-star Darnell Savage doesn't have an offer, but is interested in Syracuse. He is looking to camp in June in order to impress the staff.

Similar to Savage, St. Peter's Prep corner D'won Walker is as high on Syracuse as a prospect without an offer can be. He could be an interesting fallback option.

Derrick Balty from Plant Senior High in Tampa (Fla.) has a Syracuse offer and is another cornerback with size much like Davis. He is taking things slow, but could be a target to monitor later in the cycle depending on how things work out.

Final Thoughts

Davis' decommitment is obviously not a good thing. But Syracuse was not completely shocked by the move. They will continue to pursue Davis and will leave a spot open in the class regardless of who else pulls the trigger. There are plenty of talented options out there this class, and Syracuse will be fine with the prospects on the radar.
