The Syracuse University football program already has one commit from C.H. Flowers High School in Springdale, Md. – lineman Michael Kay -- and now it appears the Orange are in the pole position for another promising Flowers prospect in running back Jarren Brown.

Brown, a 5-foot-8, 186-pound running back-cornerback, currently holds offers from SU, Navy and James Madison, but is receiving a lot of interest from Boston College and Northwestern. So where does SU stand for Brown?

“I would say Syracuse is at the top right now,” Brown told Syracusefan.com. “I’m real good with Coach [Chris] White. I have been talking to him since March, when they offered. He’s at the beach right now and he just texted me from the beach.”

Brown is a versatile player who put up some impressive numbers last year in Maryland’s toughest public school league – the Prince George’s County 4A, which is home to two more SU targets in Roosevelt’s Okechuckwu Okoroha and Dalonte Wallace and has produced several SU recruits in recent years. He racked up 950 yards and 13 touchdowns on 110 carries, had one reception for a 25-yard touchdown and at outside linebacker, had 50 tackles and seven sacks.

Brown, who runs a 4.5-second 40-yard dash, is being recruited by Syracuse as a running back, while others are looking at him on defense.

“My biggest strength is I can run you over, or I can make you miss and run by you. I’m not just a one-skill back; I can do many things,” he said.

Brown had planned on visiting SU last weekend with Kay, but a miscommunication caused him to miss the trip. Kay, a 285-pound offensive guard who committed to SU in May, is doing his part to lure his talented teammate up to the Cuse.

“He called me today, asking when I was going to commit to Syracuse,” Brown said, laughing.

But it doesn’t seem likely he’ll commit anywhere anytime soon. Brown wants to wait it out and take his official visits during the season. BC’s coaches have said they will offer him if his tape looks good after three games this fall, and he also has upcoming visits planned to Northwestern (“They have me rated as one of their top prospects in 2008), Richmond and Delaware.

“I have offers still waiting for me. I want to try and see how many offers I get,” he said.

So, then, what will he be looking for in a college program?

“A school that is going to win or is in the process of rebuilding. Good guys and a good coaching staff, and a chance to play early. I don’t want to go some place with five guys in the same spot on the depth chart,” he said.
