SU Targets PA Tight End

Tight end Steve Marck of Fairless Hills, Pa., isn’t ready to name a clear-cut leader quite yet, but based on an early offer from Syracuse and a recent visit to SU, it’s safe to say the Orange are in good position with the well-rounded junior prospect.

Marck, a 6-3, 240-pounder, was offered by SU assistant coach Phil Earley in late February and took a visit last month. Marck liked what he saw and holds the Cuse in high esteem.

“I went up for the junior day and had a really good time. I really liked it up there. I’m going back in May because my mother didn’t get to go with me, and I’m going to go for camp, also” he said. “I got to go on a private tour with my recruiting coach, coach Earley, and I got to meet with coach Robinson for 10 or 15 minutes.”

So how did the one-one-one with Syracuse’s head coach go?

“He came off like a very nice man and a very good coach who really knew what he was talking about. I know he’s been in the NFL and he’s got those two Super Bowl rings, so that’s really good to know,” Marck said. “I talk to [Coach] Earley regularly and he’s a really good guy, too.”

Marck, who runs a 4.8-second 40-yard dash, is a combination tight end who can send pass rushers heading into the opposite direction and also make gains in the intermediate passing game.

“Definitely my blocking would be my best strength. I feel like I finish my blocks very well,” he said. “Then I think my hands are strong as well. They like my blocking but they also like my hands and how I run good routes.”

Last year Marck had 17 catches for 260 yards and five touchdowns. Next fall he’ll add some linebacker duties to his plate; his school has a large team and rarely plays anyone on both sides of the ball.

Marck also holds an offer from Buffalo and is hearing from UConn, Marshall, North Carolina, Rutgers and Pitt. He’s waiting to see which coaches come through the school during the spring recruiting period so that he can get an idea of who is most serious about pursuing him. After that, he said, he could commit early, but will wait until the time is right.

“It could be soon or it could be signing day. I’ll know when I’ve found the right place for me,” he said. “I think I want to study business or communications, and I know Syracuse has a great communications school, so that’s definitely a plus … And it’s only four hours from home, so it’s not too far but it’s also not too close.”
