PG Wilson Draws Cuse Visit Today
Wilson, a sophomore, had a strong summer playing with the New York Gauchos after averaging 14 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals as a freshman. In return the 6-foot-1, 193-pounder received early verbal offers from Rutgers and Xavier in addition to interest from SU, UCLA, Arizona, Texas, Memphis, St. John's and Villanova and others.
"I think it's the physicality in his game. He's such a physical player for a young player. Plus he has such high basketball IQ. And he can turn the corner very well but he can also run the pick and roll. He's very crafty at finishing and getting in for offensive rebounds," Benjamin told Syracusefan.com.
"Defensively, he's a dynamo. He's tremendous," Benjamin said. "He's a muscle."
Wilson has grown three inches since last year, and has two older brothers who are 6-3 and 6-4. Academically, there are no concerns with either he or Morris – there never are with players from Hotchkiss, one of the most prestigious schools in the Northeast, where only 20 percent of applicants are accepted, most of them among the tops at their previous schools.
Wilson and Morris knew each other as youngsters; both of their fathers were traveling in the Military. When Morris decided he's made the right decision in leaving home-state Georgia for Hotchkiss, he called Wilson in Alaska to sell him on the move. After an arduous application process, Wilson was admitted to Hotchkiss as well.
"They might [play in college together]. It depends. They're both individual but they're also similar in many ways. Both are very bright," he said. "As a coach, I'd love to see it, however, they're both individuals."
That begs the question: how interested is SU?
"They like him a lot," Benjamin said. "They're coming in on Wednesday. Coach Hopkins and Coach Boeheim are coming to see both Derrick and Jason."
Benjamin added that Wilson has not yet begun to focus on recruiting and has no favorites at this point.
