Pure center prospects aren't easy to find and Enola, Pa., product Matt Couch is one of the better…
Couch Talks Orange
Pennsylvania offensive lineman Matt Couch, the 11th-ranked center in the country according to Scout.com, has visited Syracuse four times and is hoping for a scholarship offer. He recently sent some senior highlight film to a number schools, including SU, and is awaiting word on potential scholarship offers.
"I'm getting ready for things to start to pick up because I just got my film together and sent it out. Boston College already requested hard copies, I guess so they can hand it out to their coaches," Couch said. "I sent it to Syracuse and called there but I haven't heard back yet. I guess that was a couple of days ago."
Couch has offers from Army and Navy and is receiving serious interest from SU, BC, Penn State and Michigan. He'll wait to see which schools seem to be most interested and then schedule his official visits. He's being recruited for SU by assistant coaches Phil Earley and Chris Wiesehan.
"I think coach Wiesehan is a good offensive line coach. He's a younger guy with a lot of energy. Coach Early, my recruiting coordinator, is a great guy too. I have nothing bad to say," he said. "Syracuse has great facilities and academics, they play in the Big East and though they haven't been as successful, they have all of the tools they need to be successful."
Couch, who boasts a 99.9 average in his coursework, would like to major in business management.
"I take academics seriously," he said. "I want to go to a school where you don't just get a diploma and it doesn't mean something. Of course, I also like big-time football and playing somewhere with great tradition."
Couch is a bit taller than 6-foot-2 and weighs 270 pounds. He explained his strengths for Syracusefan.com: "I think I've got great field awareness. I have a great feel for where I fit in the scheme of the offense, and also playing to the whistle and keeping my tenacity going," he said. "And with working on improving my athleticism last summer I've added that to my field awareness."
Couch said he's not very much affected by the uncertainty surrounding SU's program.
"I definitely look at it, but until those coaches are gone, if that happens, I've just got to go with what they offer."
