Game Preview
Friday’s exhibition game is the opener for both teams. It is the lone exhibition for the Blue Demons. DePaul is coming off a closed scrimmage that was held at
Bradley
on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Demons welcome in a bunch of Maroons from Hyde Park on Friday night. The U of C team plays in Division III and is led by Mike McGrath. McGrath is in his 11th year at the helm of the men’s basketball program with a 158-99 record. A three-time UAA Conference Coach of the Year, McGrath has guided Chicago to an NCAA Division III elite eight berth and sweet 16 appearance, as well as four UAA titles.
The Maroons struggled last year finishing 6-19 overall and 6-8 in UAA play. McGrath looks forward to the challenge of taking on a Division I opponent.
"I believe that our success in the UAA over the years has been the direct result of a rigorous schedule,” McGrath said in a statement. “The opportunity to play a Big East team should be a lot of fun for our team. I am especially excited about playing DePaul after growing up in Chicago watching their great teams and players over the years. Most importantly, however, I believe that the competition prepares our team to compete for a UAA championship."
The Maroons shared the experience of a 10 day tour of Argentina & Chile in September.
One name familiar to DePaul fans on the U of C roster is senior guard Jake Pancratz. Pancratz, who starred at Schaumburg High School, is the son of Blue Demons legend Andy Pancratz. Pancratz, who averaged 10.8 points per game last year, is the second highest leading returning scorer for the Maroons. Jake also led the team in assists last season.
Pancratz will get a lot of help from 6-4 senior forward John Kinsella (10.9 ppg, 3.5 rpg) who is the team’s leading returning scorer and rebounder. 6-8 sophomore forward Steve Stefanou will draw the difficult task of trying to guard DePaul’s
Mac Koshwal
.
This game should be a good tune up for the Blue Demons as they prepare for their season opener against Columbia at Allstate Arena on the 17th.
