Rene Sees U-M Offer in his Future

Patrice Rene

The message was clear to 2016 St. Peters (Peterborough, Ontario) Patrice Rene during his visit to Michigan last weekend… the Wolverines will be keeping a keen eye on him.

Patrice Rene thought he knew what to expect heading into his Michigan visit last week.  After all, he had visited campus last summer and came away with fairly impressed.  Much to his surprise the second trip turned out even better.

“I think the visit went really well,” Rene said.  “I was very impressed with what I saw.  The coaching staff was amazing.  They were really great with us.  They showed a lot of love.  It was a great experience.”

The only thing that could’ve made his time in Ann Arbor better was scholarship offer.  The rising Canadian prospect already holds offers from Ohio State, Indiana, Akron, Syracuse, Rutgers, but he isn’t placing any of them above Michigan or any other school pursuing him.

“Most of the offers are kind of fresh,” said Rene.  “It is too early (to name a leader) right now.  I’m just taking everything I possibly can from the process, really listening to what all the coaches have to say so I can (determine) a leader. So I’m just taking in all of the information that I can.”

“(Michigan) said they were very impressed with what they saw of me so far at Sound Mind Sound Body.  They really want to have the chance to work with me one on one to see what I really can offer. They said a lot of good things about me.  They said they think that I could fit in the program and I definitely have a spot there.  They basically want a chance to see me more to evaluate (me) because they recruiting me right now as a corner of safety so they’re trying to figure out the where I would fit best in their defense.  They really wanted me to camp (at Michigan), but unfortunately I could not do so because of exams back at home.  Right now they just need to see more tape on me or if not see me work out some way.  But I’m most definitely confident that they’re going to offer based on the way that they’re talking to me. I’m not worried at all.”

Rene’s interest in the Wolverines dates back prior to his becoming a major football recruit.  Michigan is among the programs that really appealed to him growing up.

“It’s the tradition,” he said.  “Michigan is just a household name in football.  They’ve just always been a powerhouse.  Whoever you are, you knew who Michigan was.  The rivalries, the tradition that they’ve had throughout the years.  You can not know Michigan.  Another thing that really attracted me to Michigan was their academics. You get the best of both worlds there.  They have one of the best academic (reputations) in the country, and that attracted me there too.”

Many of those attractive attributes are part of the criteria he will use down the line to determine which school he’ll ultimately go to.

“(One factor) would have to be the coaching staff.  It would be the biggest factor.  How they act with their players and how they treat them.  Is it a family environment that is somewhere that I could see myself being for four years? Also, what kind of players that they have on campus already.  Is it a setting where I think I can go there and start right away? I want to be able to go to college my freshman year and contribute as early as I can, so depending on the depth chart, how comfortable am I with (the opportunity). Also most important how are their academics.  That is going to have me set for life after football.  Somewhere I would be comfortable going back, would be okay even if football doesn’t work out.  Those are the factors that are going to determine my decision.”

At the moment Rene, who will be transferring to Alexandria (Va.) Episcopal high school in the fall, isn’t in any rush to make that choice.

“As of right now I’m trying to commit before my senior season, so after my junior year is when I plan on committing.”
